Remembrance Day 2019

Remembrance Day

Message from the Ombudsman | 11 November 2019

Every Remembrance Day, we show honour and reverence to those women and men who sacrificed their lives, their families, and the comforts of home so we can enjoy ours.

Over the years, Canadian soldiers, aircrew and sailors have fought valiantly to uphold our freedoms in two world wars as well as in many other theatres to assure peace and respect for human rights in the world.

We stop and remember because it can be too easy, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, to forget. And remembering such a sacrifice is all too important.

This year, Canada marks the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign.

Canada’s participation in this military campaign took place over a 20-month period during the Second World War. More than 93,000 Canadians took part in this bitter struggle to liberate Italy. The Italian Campaign began on the island of Sicily in July 1943, and moved north up the Italian mainland through to the end of the war in Europe in May 1945.

The costs of the Italian Campaign were immense. Nearly 6,000 Canadians would die. Others came back scarred from battle.

They did their duty to Canada. It is now our duty to pay tribute to their selfless dedication.

We remember all those who served and those who supported them, and we thank you.
