Ombudsman Advisory Council and Application Instructions

Ombudsman Advisory Council

This Advisory Council consists of eight volunteers with specialized expertise in the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF). Their input directly impacts this office with strategic advice related to the mandate, professional principles and organizational structure. 

Under its mandate, the Ombudsman Advisory Council:

  • Provides the Ombudsman with advice on matters relating to the fair treatment and overall well-being of members of DND/CAF, their families and other constituents of the Office;
  • Makes observations on broader challenges and problems within the DND/CAF community and recommends to the Ombudsman ways to deal with these issues;
  • Serves as a sounding board for initiatives or recommendations being considered by the Ombudsman’s Office;
  • Provides a source of information for the identification of systemic or emerging issues;
  • Provides advice on planned systemic investigations or reviews;
  • Promotes awareness of the Ombudsman’s Office in their respective communities.

In accordance with the Ministerial Directives Respecting the Ombudsman for the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces, “the Ombudsman Advisory Committee shall be determined by the Ombudsman based on a pool of candidates approved by the Minister”. Applications will be held on file for one year.

The Terms of Reference provides useful information including the Council membership, attendance and tenure, and operations of the Council.
