Chief of Military Personnel Provides Ombudsman with Official Languages Action Plan

24 May 2007

Mr. Yves Coté
National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman
100 Metcalfe Street, 12th Floor
Ottawa, Ontario K1P 5M1

Dear Mr. Coté,

During our meeting of 7 May 2007, you asked that I provide information on the short-term actions that the Canadian Defence Academy intends to undertake to ameliorate the concerns you identified regarding the ability of the Canadian Forces training system to offer services in French to unilingual francophone recruits. Attached as promised is a table that describes the immediate actions that will be implemented in Borden. The final version of the Canadian Forces Base Borden Official Languages Strategic Plan, describing the medium and long-term initiatives, is still under revision by CDA and will be sent to you under separate cover by the end of next week.

Once again, I wish to thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. I am confident that we have taken the necessary steps to address the concerns you expressed in your original letter to the Chief of the Defence Staff on 8 January 2007. Should you have additional comments or concerns, I am available to meet with you at your convenience.

Sincerely,

T.H.W. Pile
Rear-Admiral
